Trucos de diseño para diseñar como locos

The perfect body

An usual post title it would have been: how to choose the body for the copy text. But if i were a usual designer i would not be writing this blog.

This method calculates the line spacing and the body that must be taken so that text is readable and understandable, I recommend you to do several printing tests before making a final decision about the body and line spacing elected. The method is based on making a visualization exercise with narrowed eyes to see the stain or color sensation, produced by the text. It is recommended to receive a 50% gray stain. If gray is too thin line spacing must be reduced, if the text lines are far apart the text will be readable but will cost focus attention when reading it.

In the opposite, if the sense of color tends to be dark, it is necessary to increase the line spacing as the density of the text will make it very tiring to read. In this balancing acts, in addition, the stain of typography. A very slick font is useful for headline and other elements that must drawn reader’s attention, but as a general text can be a nightmare. It is important that you have a clear view of what you want to get, and what families are usefull for each element before starting to make printing tests. It is also advisable to have taken decisions on the number and arrangement of columns, space between them, and distances to the margins, as all these factors affect the readability and viewing the page.

The pages’ stain that you can see in the image above is too light due to the line spacing setting, could be valid as easy on the eye. To make it even more appropriate it would be desirable to reduce the line spacing slightly, as in the example below, or to increase the body of typography.

To vary the line spacing can edit the attributes of the paragraph or to alter the grid, if we have the text aligned to it in the application preferences as expressed in the post about how to customize the baseline grid in Indesign.

If the printed test shows the result of the image below, in which the color sensation of the page is very dark, it would be necessary to reduce the body or increase the line spacing to adjust the stain, depending on the needs of design.

I’ll end with some conventions about the copy text body:

  • It’s s commonly used for copy text body sizes between 8 and 12 points, with approximate line spacing of 1.5 points.
  • It is desirable that the line length is not such as to hinder the return of focus to the next line.
  • The body of the copy text should be normalbook, regular, or medium, never bold, black, or italic. It is also advisable not to use condensed types, nor spread.
  • The use of crabs, sorted and unsorted lists and summaries help arranging the reading, so the content becomes more easily understandable.
