A very sought resource, especially in the design of packaging, cover art, serigraphsand similar products, is dummies. The dummy is a simulation of a real object so that itcan see the effect it would have the product when finished.
Create a dummy base is relatively easy and it will save much time once you have added it to your resource library. For most designers do not pose any challenge, but for those of you who are started recently it can help you to avoid giving too many laps.
It is strongly recommended to scan supporting material first, such as books, LP, CD’s surface and boxes or other textures that are necessary. It’s not worth wasting time drawing these resources when it is easier to scan them, and besides, they’re never going to be that good. The bottom image shows the edge of a book I will use to develop the fake cover of a novel, this fiction is just one example of many that can be performed.
Now create a document filled with a layer of white about the size of the cover, then extends the document so that you can include a side and the shadow of the object.With the transform tool in perspective mode will get the feel of depth necessary for the cover. Put some guides so you can then repeat the transformation of the cover inthe same proportions.
Then the cover is placed in a lower layer and is transformed back into perspective. I have marked in green the area in which to place the cover. As seen in this case the book spine is achieved with a texture I’ve scanned before, as if I had created the object with a 3D design program.
Once it has obtained the necessary sense of depth, it is desirable to add a shadow to finish convincing to the human eye that the object physically exists. Achieve an adequate shade drawing a black filled ellipse to subsequently apply a Gaussian blur. The percentage of blur depends on the image resolution when you aredeveloping the dummy, but the larger the softer the resulting shadow. To soften the shadows even more and that does not distract too much attention to go down the opacity of the layer. The layer is placed in the shade all the way down the stack of layers. We already have a basis for fiction books.
Now place on a new layer the cover, adjust it to the dummy using the transform tool and the help of the guides we have had the wisdom to place before, and with a single step and have the our fictional book.
